Greetings!  Hopefully by the time you read this update, the snow will have melted and the temperatures will have returned to more agreeable levels.  CMIG is busy finalizing the spring workshop which will be on May 18th at the State Library in Columbus.  Through our peer-reviewed selection process, we have chosen two groups of our colleagues to present on very timely topics at the spring workshop: weeding and evaluating electronic resources.  Stay tuned for more details and more about the workshop in a future email.

We welcome your input for future directions and activities for this interest group.  Please contact us with your input: Kathleen Baril (k-baril@onu.edu) and Jessica Grim (jessica.grim@oberlin.edu).

“There’s a lot to Celebrate!”

Once again, we’d like to welcome our new members and spread the news about upcoming events around the region! Save the date for the CMCIG Spring Workshop, Novel-Ties: Classics and Comics in the Classroom, Monday, April 20, 2015 at the OSU Main Campus! Our guest speakers will provide a great forum for all who are interested in learning about nontraditional approaches to using award winning literature and graphic novels in the classroom. Our presenters are Stephanie Bange, Wright State University, Anita Gonzalez, Ohio Resource Center (OSU), and Caitlin McGurk, Ohio State University, BICLM. Come join us for open discussions and a visit to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum (BICLM). For more information contact Deidra Herring herring.44@osu.edu or Sharon Kerestes skerestes@cedarville.edu.

The idea of “Animation” has a special significance for OSU, given the campus’ well-known comics collection and cartoon museum, its Wexner Center for the Arts, and its Advanced Computing Center for Art and Design (ACCAD).  On behalf of the CMCIG, we’re pleased to announce that the 2016 Annual Children’s Literature Association Conference (ChLA) will be hosted by The Ohio State University, sponsored by the Department of Teaching and Learning, College of Education and Human Ecology.  The conference theme will be “Animation.”  This concept reflects new developments in both the aesthetic creation and the critical analysis of children’s and YA literature. http://www.childlitassn.org/
In addition to the celebration of the 2016 conference, the Highlights for Children historical collection will be presented with a mix of interactive materials to engage audiences in the OSU Thompson Library Gallery. The exhibit will offer attendees a deeper look into this hallmark magazine that has been a distinguished model for creatively engaging children in reading and writing. Through its popular publications, it has served as a diverse resource for families and educators to help children think critically and learn from the world around them.

As the exhibit curator and researcher, I was highly enlightened by the educational philosophies of creator’s Dr. Garry C. Myers and wife Caroline Myers. I think you will be too!  Celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the magazine with us at OSU in 2016! For further questions contact Deidra Herring herring.44@osu.edu.

Kathryn Venditti is 2014 Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award winner

Eboni Johnson, Oberlin College; President

Our heartfelt congratulations go to Kathryn Venditti, Reference & Instruction Librarian at Ashland University. She received the 2014 Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award, which is ALAO’s highest honor.

Award winner Kathryn Venditti (on left) with Betsy Blankenship.

Past President Betsy Blankenship presented the award to Kathryn at the 40th Annual Conference, held on November 14 at the Kalahari Convention Center in Sandusky. Betsy noted that Kathryn has been involved with ALAO in several capacities, including Interest Group Coordinator, chair of the Instruction Interest group, and member of the program committee. She has made valuable contributions as Interest Group Coordinator, helping incoming chairs to be successful. Through her efforts to establish communication channels, processes, and training, she has prepared the interest group leadership to leverage all of ALAO’s rich resources. The handbook that she prepared for interest group chairs was lauded as being “brilliant for training and preparation of people that come and go from their roles.” One of her nominators stated that Kathryn is “incredibly supportive of her colleagues [and is] willing to lend a hand, an ear, or a shoulder whenever asked” and that in her role as Interest Group Coordinator, she “gracefully demonstrates the 4 Cs: class, coolness, compassion, and concern.”

Way to go, Kathryn. We appreciate all that you do!

President’s Report

Eboni Johnson, Oberlin College

President Eboni Johnson

President Eboni Johnson

As someone posted on Facebook recently, “Can’t go wrong with the 3 C’s of ALAO 2014 -Char Booth, ALA Prez Courtney Young and cake!” Thank you, everyone, for a successful 40th anniversary conference and celebration in Sandusky on November 13 & 14. Despite the frigid temperatures and the major snowstorm in northeast Ohio, we had a great turnout for the preconference workshop on Thursday, facilitated by Char Booth, and the full day of conference sessions on Friday, including the keynote address by ALA President Courtney Young. The evaluations are still being analyzed, but the 54 from preconference and the 175 from main conference were very positive on all fronts. This is due to the hard work of the planning committee:

Don Appleby, University of Akron
Judith Cerqua, The Ohio State University
Jessica DeCaro, Case Western Reserve University
Sheryl Gannon, Brown Mackie College Findlay
Beate Gersch, University of Akron
Deidra Herring, The Ohio State University
Elys Kettling Law, College of Wooster
Marsha Miles, Cleveland State University
Shelly Miller, OHIONET
Alisa Mizikar, Wittenberg University
Judy Carey Nevin, Ohio University Lancaster
Lois Rekowski, Eastern Gateway Community College
Diane Schrecker, Ashland University
Kaylin Tristano, Brown Mackie College North Canton
Kathryn Venditti, Ashland University

I appreciate everything you did to help make my vision for this conference a reality … even if that meant we couldn’t have bacon at breakfast. But we did have cake, so there’s that. Continue reading
