A sincere thank you to all those who participated in the ALAO Membership Survey distributed last fall. We had 181 responses! That’s nearly half of our membership which includes 346 regular members, 4 retiree members, and 21 student members! We received valuable feedback on preferences regarding conferences, workshops, and membership benefits that the Board has already begun analyzing and incorporating into our efforts to provide a valued professional association. Professional Development Committee Update

Congratulations Rich Wisneski of Cleveland State University and Donald Pearson of Mount Carmel Health Sciences Library as recipients of this year’s Continuing Education Grant. This was not an easy decision as there were so many worthy and well expressed needs among this year’s applicants. However, the committee felt that Mr. Wisneski and Mr. Pearson’s applications stood out for professional opportunity and gained experience.

Mr. Wisneski will be using this grant to fund his attendance at the Electronic Resources & Libraries Conference in Austin, TX this April to present his research project “When Numbers Don’t Lie: Telling Not-So-Good Assessment Stories to Faculty and Administrators.” This presentation focuses on gathering collection data with strategies to engage with faculty to make them aware of and part of the collection-building process. In addition to presenting Mr. Wisneski is looking forward to attending the many educational sessions offered at the conference.

Mr. Pearson will be co-presenting the paper, “How Does Instruction by Medical Librarians on Using a Federated Search Tool Impact the Result of Medical Information Research: A Mixed-Method Descriptive Quantitative Study” at the Medial Library Association’s annual which will be held this May in Toronto. This year’s conference is a special opportunity as this year’s conference is the combined efforts of the American Medical Library Association, the Canadian Health Libraries Association/Association des bibliothèques de la santé du Canada as well as the International Clinical Librarian Conference making for a culturally rich experience professionally and personally. In addition to being employed at Mount Carmel Health Sciences Library, Mr. Pearson is enrolled at Kent State University in the MLIS program.

Research & Publications Grant Awards, Recipient Update-Jane Wu

We reached out to the 2014 RPC award winners for an update about their research projects and how they used the award funds.  All three winners made great use of the funding.  Here is an update from Jane Wu.

The title for my ALAO research grant of 2014 was “A  Comparative Study of Information Literacy Education & Student Library Use Experiences in Three Chinese Academic Libraries”. $497 grant was offered on March 14, 2014 from ALAO to support the project. The plan was to use my two weeks’ exchange librarian opportunity at Shanghai Jiaotong University in June 2014 to explore the current information literacy education and student library use experiences in three academic libraries in China: Shanghai Jiaotong Unviersity, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology and Southwest Jiaotong University.

During my two weeks as an exchange librarian at Shanghai Jiaotong University, I was able to interview some library faculty and library staff from Shanghai Jiaotong University and University of Shanghai for Science and Technology on their information literacy programs and trainings to their campus students. Because I was scheduled with many other academic exchange activities and presentations during that same two weeks period of time, I was not able to assess all data collected and conduct thorough literature reviews in Chinese. Due to the limited of time and funding,  I was also not able to collect data from Southwest Jiaotong University (which is 1223 miles away from Shanghai) as originally planned.

I am now granted the chance to do sabbatical in spring academic term 2016 which will allow me to continue and expand this past research project. Instead of just researching three academic universities, it will now be a collaborative comparative research project with three academic librarians from China. The new title is now “A Comparative Study of Information Literacy Education & Student Library Use Experiences in U.S. and Chinese Academic Libraries”. I am also very grateful that ALAO again granted me $2000 to support this research project. The project is expected to be completed in May 2016.

Ohio Librarians Sponsored at AAAS Annual Meeting

Four Ohio librarians participated as sponsored registrants at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) held February 12-15 in Washington, D.C. Evan Meszaros, Case Western Reserve University; Amanda Reinhart, The Ohio State University; Alison Ricker, Oberlin College; and Zach Sharrow, The College of Wooster, were among the librarians sponsored by the Site Licensing Department of AAAS, which has paid the meeting registration fees for 30 librarians each year for at least ten years. The process is coordinated each year by the ALA Liaison to AAAS. Ricker has served in this role since May 2011 (more about that function in the ACRL Blog, Oct. 10, 2014) and has attended the AAAS annual meeting every year beginning with February 2010 in San Diego, California.

The AAAS meetings are international in scope, dominated by scientists, science writers and journalists, science educators at all levels, plus representatives from government agencies, policy advisors, foundations, various non-profits, and a bevy of students who present posters and mingle with researchers. In addition, 2 days of the meeting are devoted to Family Days – it’s a delightful, if frenetic, forum for children and adults to engage with scientists and have memorable hands-on experience in science demonstrations. Highlights of this year’s meeting included excellent plenary lectures, many of which can be viewed online, and the hilarious session summarizing the 2015 Ig Nobel Prizes awarded by the Annals of Improbable Research (“research that makes you laugh and then think”). The live Webcast of the 2016 Ig Nobel Award Ceremony would be a fun public event in your library – or head to Cambridge to see them in person: Thursday, September 22, 2016, at Sanders Theatre, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Tickets will go on sale in July.

Librarians at the conference met together on Sunday morning, at a session coordinated and chaired by Ricker. Presentations by Sarah Jeong, Wake Forest University on “Flipping a Science Information Literacy Course” and Mary Frances Lembo, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory on “Data Visualization” were followed by roundtable discussions on these and other topics. The discussion summaries, presentation slides and two presentations given by librarians at other sessions during the conference are now accessible online in Google drive, and will also be posted to the Science Librarian portal.

The 2017 annual meeting will be held February 16-20 in Boston and promises to be an excellent opportunity for librarians to immerse in the most exciting and compelling issues of science, with a focus on evidence-based science policies that serve society.

A Moment from Library History-Packhorse Librarians in Kentucky

According Dave Tabler’s blog located at appalachianhistory.net:

“Established in 1935, the Pack Horse Library Project was aimed at providing reading materials to rural portions of Eastern Kentucky with no access to public library facilities. Librarians riding horses or mules traveled 50 to 80 miles a week up rocky creekbeds, along muddy footpaths, and among cliffs to deliver reading materials to the most remote residences and schools in the mountains. Some homes were so remote that the book women often had to go part of the way on foot, or even by row boat.”

Assessment and Instruction Interest Groups to Co-Host Spring Workshop
The Assessment Interest Group and the Instruction Interest Group will be cohosting a spring workshop, “The Evolution of Information Literacy: Framework and Assessment”, on Wednesday, April 20 at the State Library. The keynote speaker will be Craig Gibson from The Ohio State University, co-chair of the ACRL committee that created the Framework. Collection Management Interest Group
CMIG had a great response to its Fall 2015 survey asking members what they most wanted to see addressed at the CMIG spring workshop – thanks to all who responded! The workshop is being developed in direct response to what we heard from our members, and it promises to be both thought-provoking and instructive for all ALAO members.
The Workshop will include a panel presentation on issues relating to “the big picture” for ebooks in our libraries, a discussion and brainstorming session about technical services issues peculiar to ebooks, and a round of lightning talks on topics across a range of collection management issues, including promotion of resources.
The workshop will be held Wednesday, April 27, 10:00 – 3:00, at the State Library in Columbus [note that this date differs from what was announced at the ALAO conference – 4/27 is the correct date]. Please mark your calendars, and stay tuned for registration information.

‘Save the Date’ for the Upcoming Summer Meeting!

Welcome to a new year of exciting events and new members including our co-chair, Desiree Fuerst to the CMCIG!

Last year, I had the pleasure of working with past co-chair, Sharon Kerestes, Cedarville University to put together a wonderful line up of presenters for the “Novel-Ties: Classics and Comics in the Classroom” workshop. This year, Desiree and I are planning for the summer meeting to welcome you back from the very busy 2015 academic year to find out what folks are up to. Where did the time go…?

We hope everyone enjoyed the 2015 workshop and ALAO Annual Conference as much as we did. We were also thrilled with the positive feedback we received from workshop attendees. Although we had a robust agenda, there was less time for follow-up discussions to address future items/ideas to bring the group together. With this in mind, please save the June meeting date for open collaboration focusing on the current state of the profession, and to revisit current issues concerning CMCs. We will also offer a call-in option this year for those unable to travel to OHIONET. This will be a great time to think about the 2016 ALAO Conference call for proposals and topics focusing on tracks you’d like to see included in the programming.

As we put together a solid agenda for June, please feel free to contact us for additional topics and your feedback is welcome. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Distance Education Interest Group Announce Visionary Award Winner and Spring Workshop

The 2016 DLIG Visionary Award winner is Sara Klink!! Sara is currently the Assistant Directory of Library Services at Stark State College where she works in a non-traditional academic library. She has worked as a librarian for 10 years in both public and academic libraries. Sara developed and implemented an innovative instruction program on her campus that incorporates in-person and online components to provide outstanding embedded library services. Congratulations Sara!!

The Cleveland State University Michael Schwartz Library and the Kent State University Libraries are planning the first Northern Ohio Digital Commons User Group Meeting on Monday, April 25, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m at Michael Schwartz Library, Rhodes Tower, room 502.  The meeting is open to all libraries in northern Ohio who use Digital Commons as their Institutional Repository. The day’s agenda includes lightning round presentations, small group breakout sessions on select topics, a DC Bells & Whistles webinar, networking opportunities, and more. Bring your IR promotional materials to share with the group.

A schedule of events will be posted soon. Sign in and light breakfast begins at 9:30 a.m. Lunch begins at 11:30 at some nearby (walkable) restaurants. Use this time to network!

The meeting is free but please register and include your lightning round topic if presenting (5 minute limit) and your choice of restaurant for lunch ($ on your own). Parking will be reserved for you for a fee of $8.  When you register to attend the DC+NOUG meeting, enter “yes” in the Parking Reservation field and then visit the CSU ShopNet account to pay by credit card (Enter your first and last name and click on the “DC+NOUG meeting at the Library” Radio Button).  Parking Instructions will be emailed to you once payment is verified.  There is metered parking around the campus, but there are no guarantees that a space will be available.

From Defiance College Archives:  Court News Ohio, a communication service of the Ohio Supreme Court, visited the Defiance College campus recently to do a feature video on the Hermann Wiebe collection of Ohio courthouse paintings housed in the Pilgrim Library. Wiebe created oil paintings of all 88 Ohio county courthouses, plus the Ohio Statehouse. The story features interviews with director Michelle Blank, archivist Barb Sedlock, Judge Joseph Schmenk and Hermann’s son, Harry Wiebe. Kent State University Libraries Provide Access to Kent State Shootings Audio Archive

Over 100 reel-to-reel audio recordings pertaining to the May 1970 Kent State shootings and their aftermath are now accessible through the Kent State University Special Collections and Archives’ digital repository. Some of the recently digitized items include previously inaccessible audio recordings of radio call-in forums, a speech by University President Robert I. White the day after the shootings, a press conference with six students who met with President Richard M. Nixon just days after the shootings, the Scranton Commission hearings, and a speech made by Dick Gregory at the Kent State Memorial Service in 1971.

The digitization project started in spring 2015, after the Kent State University Libraries were awarded a $2,000 Ohio Archives Grant for the proposal, “Providing Access to the Kent State Shootings Audio Archive.” The Ohio Archives Grants are funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, an arm of the National Archives and Records Administration through their State and National Archival Partnership Grants program. Kent State University Libraries faculty members Cara Gilgenbach, Virginia Dressler, and Lae’l Hughes-Watkins prepared the successful proposal.

Gilgenbach, Head of Special Collections and Archives noted, “As we head toward the 50th anniversary of this pivotal event in American history, we seek to provide expanded access to unprocessed portions of the collection, especially audio-visual materials, which are highly sought by researchers.” The audio recordings are available online and are accessible worldwide.

Do you have a project that you would love to get started but need some extra help? Is there something on the back burner in you library that you would like to see addressed? Perhaps a graduate student in the Kent State University MLIS program would be a good fit for your library. The Internship program requires 150 hours of service and students are eager to roll up their sleeves to help out and gain much valued hands-on experience in an academic library. Students are able to help with a wide variety of work such as weeding and collection analysis projects, preparing and assessing instructional materials, creating Libguides, working with library social media platforms, providing reference services, or reviewing and drafting policies. The Internship is an important part of our students’ professional formation and we are grateful to all the libraries that support our program – and the profession – by working with Internship students. I hope everyone enjoyed the 2015 Annual Conference and/or the Preconference. I would like to thank our keynote speaker Cindy Foley and workshop presenter Trevor Dawes. Both sessions were well received. On behalf the conference planning committee, I would also like to thank all the presenters and attendees.  Without your support and participation, this conference cannot happen. The vendors and sponsors give ALAO the fiscal abilities to continue to offer top notch programming. To my planning committee, I owe more thanks that can be imagined!
The 2015 Annual Conference included 29 breakout sessions, 21 posters, and 31 vendor exhibitors/sponsors. We had several colleagues from outside Ohio join us to present and/or attend, including people from California, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and others.    In addition, 50 attendees participated in the preconference workshop on “Are You Ready For Leadership?” provided by Trevor Dawes.

The last few years, the ALAO Board has tried to bring more content to the users from conferences and workshops.  When you log into the website, there is a members-only area. Currently, the 2013 conference presentations and the 2015 presentations/posters (in progress as submissions continue) are available. 2014 content is being reloaded.

In 2015/16, the ALAO Board will have several initiatives that are being work on. We will closely be reviewing the data of the membership survey to set directions and efforts for the future. Also, in 2016, we will be announcing a new professional development webinar series in partnership with our fiscal agent SWON Libraries. Watch for these details soon.
