ALAO Annual Conference Call for Proposals

The ALAO Conference Planning Committee invites you to submit proposals for presentations, 25-minute spotlight sessions, or poster sessions that bring new ideas or approaches useful for academic libraries. This year’s conference theme, “Constant Change, Constant Opportunity,” looks at the challenges facing academic libraries as budgetary, institutional, occupational, and technological changes cause us to reflect and adapt how we provide services to our users and communities.

Presentations may take the form of contributed papers, demonstrations, workshops, research, or panel discussions. Spotlight sessions can be “lightning round” style programs, multimedia slides, or other presentation techniques that cover a subject or issue that can be dealt with in a 25-minute time frame. Poster sessions should embrace the conference theme and present original ideas, innovative solutions to problems, library-related projects, or creative approaches to dealing with change in today’s academic libraries.

For more details, proposal forms, and presentation grant forms, please check the conference website:

ALAO Annual Conference and Support Staff Grant and Student Grant Opportunities

ALAO seeks to encourage support staff development and participation in ALAO activities. ALAO also seeks to provide opportunities for students and new librarians to grow professionally towards a career in academic libraries. In recognition of this, ALAO awards two presenter grants, one for support staff and the other for students, to assist with presenting at the ALAO Annual Conference. Grant monies will be awarded up $150 annually for each grant. Grant monies are intended to assist with the costs incurred in preparing the presentation and modest travel costs associated with the presentation.

All grant applications will be considered by the ALAO Presenter Grant Committee. Only presenters of presentations or poster sessions chosen for inclusion in the conference by the 2011 Conference Planning Committee will be eligible for final consideration for the grant.

President’s Report (Dec 2010)

Rocki Strader, Ohio State

ALAO’s 36th Annual Conference was held on October 29, 2010, at the Crowne Plaza Columbus North. Although many institutions are still experiencing effects of the recent and continuing economic downturn, attendance was excellent. Keynote speaker, Stephen Abram, of Gale Cengage, kicked off a successful day of programs. Mr. Abrams’ slide presentation can be found on SlideShare.

Highlights in my President’s Report to the membership included:

1. The new website and online registration, hosted by Wild Apricot. This has been a long time coming and we are pleased to have it up and running. Among other things that will make our lives much easier for keeping memberships current, this set-up allows us to handle credit-card payments, which a number of you have asked for over the last several years. I would like to thank Rob Withers for his pushing on this during his term as President last year, and to Frank Bove and Brian Gray for making it happen this spring in time for us to use it to conduct registration for this conference.

2. Some of you may be aware of our situation with our fiscal agent, SWON Libraries (SouthWest Ohio and Neighboring Libraries). SWON is extensively reorganizing, which puts us in an uncomfortable situation for the second time in less than two years. We are currently on a month-to-month arrangement with SWON. As a result, we (the Executive Board) are examining the possibility of incorporating ALAO as a non-profit organization. As a chapter of ACRL, we are required to be affiliated with a non-profit, such as SWON, or to be a non-profit organization ourselves.

3. We are working on a new strategic plan for the next five years. The finalized version will be announced and posted after the November Executive Board meeting. I would like to thank Treasurer, Gaynelle Predmore, for her leadership on this endeavor, which aligns us more closely with ACRL’s current strategic plan.

4. Lindsay Midkiff Miller is stepping down as Communications Editor. I want to use this opportunity to thank her for her work over the last three years with the ALAO Newsletter and Blog. The Communications Review Committee has appointed Katie Gibson as the new Communications Editor.

This was the first conference for which online registration and payment were available. I hope it was easy and convenient for you. We plan to take further advantage of the new website platform to better communicate with ALAO’s membership, including membership renewals, and registering for Interest Group workshops that will take place in the spring.

Diversity Committee

Diane Kolosionek, Cleveland State University

ALAO Diversity Committee Wants Your Input
The ALAO Diversity Committee is in the process of reviewing ideas for their spring program and we would love to hear your thoughts and ideas. If you have attended or heard of a great program recently that speaks to diversity, inclusion and equity in libraries, please let us know by sending an email to the ALAO Diversity Committee Chair, Diane Kolosionek (d.kolosionek44@csuohio.edu). Thanks for your consideration.

NEW from ARL: Diversity Plans and Programs, SPEC Kit 319
The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published Diversity Plans and Programs, SPEC Kit 319, which explores what progress has been made in ARL member libraries to recruit and retain a diverse workforce; their recruitment and retention strategies; the elements of programs that successfully support an inclusive workplace; the people, groups, and/or committees responsible for overseeing the programs; and how libraries are assessing the effectiveness and success of such programs.

This survey indicates there has been a significant increase in the number of groups and committees formed to address diversity or inclusive workplace goals in the past ten years. Approximately half of the responding libraries have ongoing presentations and/or workshops on issues relevant to promoting an inclusive workplace.

Recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce continues to be a challenge for libraries. It is evident that research libraries are committed to actively recruit librarians from underrepresented ethnic/racial groups and have employed a variety of strategies to increase the diversity of applicant pools.

This SPEC Kit includes documentation from respondents in the form of diversity statements, diversity plans, and descriptions of diversity and recruitment programs. Programs and plans from Ohio University and Kent State University are included. For more information, including an executive summary and table of contents, please visit the ARL SPEC Kit website.
