Remembering Heidi Gauder

On behalf of the UD Libraries, I am sad to share the news of Heidi Gauder’s passing. Heidi joined the University Libraries in 1998 and had served in her role as coordinator of research and instruction since 2008.

Heidi was an amazing colleague, friend and collaborator. She mentored students and library staff at UD and around the state. ALAO honored Heidi in 2019 with the Kathryn L. Vendetti Mentoring Award, and the citation described Gauder as “the type of mentor that every new librarian wishes they had.” She also served as a mentor in the ALAO mentoring program.

She frequently presented at ALAO events and was an active researcher of Dayton history and trends in teaching and learning. She also contributed to the organization through service, as a member of the Nominating Committee 2020-2022; chair, co-chair, and then member of the Research and Publications Committee 2012-2019; and Board Member-at-large 2014-2016.

Please keep Heidi’s loved ones and colleagues in your thoughts.

Interest Group and Committee News

Diversity Committee News

ALAO values diversity in its membership, in the profession, and in future library professionals.  And for that reason, we are pleased to offer a $1,500 scholarship to a promising student enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLS program who exemplifies the qualities needed to ensure a diverse library workforce.

This year, the Diversity Committee was proud to award its Diversity Award Scholarship to Catherine King of Case Western University.

Catherine King is a graduate student in the MLIS program at Kent State University, focusing on Metadata, DAM, and cataloging. She holds a BA in Sociology from Cleveland State University. She began her library career as a page at Cleveland Public Library, worked as a student assistant at Cleveland State University, and then held positions at Lutheran Hospital and CSU before moving into her current role in the Interlibrary Loan Department at the Health Sciences Library and Case Western Reserve University. This semester, she is volunteering virtually with the Library of Congress Law Library and taking courses in cataloging and cultural heritage institutions.

Congratulations, Catherine!

In addition to celebrating this year’s winner, we would also like to remind our membership that 2025’s Diversity Scholarship Award application will be opening soon (January 1). Over the years we have seen a decrease in applications, and we feel quite confident it is not from a lack of need in the LIS community but perhaps a lack of awareness that the scholarship exists and what it can be used for.

Students who currently live in the state of Ohio who are enrolled in, OR, recently accepted to an ALA-accredited MLS program are eligible to apply. The goal of our scholarship is to help diversify the field of librarianship, and so we look for applicants with diverse identities, including, but not limited to: race/ethnicity, dis/ability, sexual orientation, class, etc.

The goal of the award is to help ease some of the financial burden for current MLS students. Winners will be awarded the scholarship in the form of a check and can be used as and when they see fit. We envision that students will use these funds to help cover the ever growing costs of education and be used towards tuition, books, technology, etc.

Soon you will receive emails on behalf of the Diversity Committee asking to help promote this award to current students in your circles. We would be eternally grateful to our colleagues who help us spread this message and help us connect with students who could benefit from a scholarship like this.

If you have questions about the Diversity Scholarship Award, please feel free to contact the Diversity Committee at: diversity-committee@alaoweb.org

Notes from the Trenches

Join the AI Community of Practice (AI COP) for Academic Librarians

As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms the landscape of academic libraries, many of us are seeking to understand and harness its potential. Enter AI COP (Community of Practice), a new group for academic librarians interested in AI organized by librarians at Carnegie Mellon University, The Ohio State University, and the Information Literacy Institute at Purdue.

Our goal is simple: to create a communal space where we can learn together, share ideas, develop resources, and collaborate on AI projects. Through fostering relationships and facilitating open dialogue, we aim to empower our community to collectively shape the future of AI in academic libraries. Whether you are brand new to recent AI developments or have years of experience, AI COP is for you.

How We Operate

For Fall 2024, we will have 10 synchronous meetings from Sept 24th through December 18th. Each meeting will focus on a theme and be capped at 100 attendees to ensure meaningful small group breakout discussions. One month, you might find yourself exploring AI-powered research tools; the next, discussing the impact of large language models on information literacy instruction.

Between these gatherings, our Discord server provides an asynchronous online space for ongoing conversations, resource sharing, and impromptu collaborations. Here, you can share your latest AI research, seek advice on implementing a new tool, or join a working group on AI ethics in libraries.

More Than Just Discussion

AI COP aims to be more than just a forum for discussion. It’s a launchpad for innovation, a support network for those venturing into new AI territories, and a collective hoping to push dialogue about AI forward in academic libraries. By leveraging new relationships and the collective wisdom of our community—now 900+ strong across at least 13 countries and 350+ unique institutions—we’re poised to make a significant impact.

Join Us

The world of AI is vast, dynamic, and overwhelming. With AI COP, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Here’s how to participate:

1. Join AI COP by filling out this Google form.

2. Connect with us on Discord to be part of the conversation and learn about resources, research, and collaboration opportunities here.

3. Questions? Email me directly at flierl.1@osu.edu.

Let’s explore AI together in alignment with our values as information professionals. Your voice and perspective are crucial as we shape the future of AI in academic libraries.
